Bamberg and Weimar

We were up and on the road again the next morning to make our way to Bamberg, which is a small town in Bavaria.  It's also a UNESCO site, which is the main reason we went.  I was a little skeptical since it's a small town and there wasn't one specific thing listed on the UNESCO sight.  I was definitely wrong.  Bamberg was maybe our favorite town in Germany.  It's exactly how you would imagine a small Bavarian town, with tons of character and culture.

We spent most of the afternoon walking around and taking in the scenery because it was so picturesque!

We stopped at the Bamberg Dom, another beautiful Gothic Catholic church.  The inside was as ornate and stunning as the outside (minus the scaffolding)

Continuing our tour of historic sights under construction....Beautiful nonetheless.

I love this clock!

After we got over the beauty of the church, we realized how hungry we were and stopped for lunch.

Mike and his pork shoulder that was bigger than his head.  That didn't stop him though....

After lunch we walked around some more and just enjoyed the town.

Our last stop before we left was for some authentic Oktoberfest attire, which we attended later in our trip.  We found this small little shop that was advertising specials for the upcoming festivities.  When we walked into the store, there were lederhosens and dirndls everywhere.  I immediately became overwhelmed trying to decipher the European sizes and the different styles.  Luckily, the owner came to my rescue....kind of.  She didn't speak a lick of English and I obviously don't speak German, so she just started pulling things off the rack.  She was only one size off with my size! She did the same for Mike.  After trying a few on, both Mike and I came out of the dressing room to show each other our attire.  Mike looked great in his lederhosen and I was pretty happy with my dirndl.  The store owner, though, was not.  With the dirndl, there is a shirt that goes underneath.  The store owner looked at me, reached down the dirndl and came out with a drawstring that made my shirt lower cut, pointed and said something in German with a huge smile on her face.  I'm pretty sure the English translation was "much better!"  I just smiled and nodded.

It was definitely an authentic German experience and I'm glad we had them for Oktoberfest.  I'll post pictures of us in them with the Oktoberfest posts so you can see them in all of their glory.

Anyone want to to wear a dirndl for a wedding dress?

After we purchased our Oktoberfest attire, we headed to the car where we hit the road to Weimar.  When we got there, we checked in to the hotel and headed out for dinner.  We were SHOCKED because everything was closed in Weimar.  Since it was Monday, everything closed at six.  The only restaurants that were open were a Vegan Indian restaurant, which Mike wouldn't even get near, and a Texas Saloon restaurant.  We settled in for burgers, french fries and beer at the saloon just as the rain started.

Needless to say, it was a disappointing end to the day.  We wish we had just stayed in Bamberg and enjoyed the town there.  I honestly think that if we had been in Weimar earlier in the day or if it hadn't been Monday, we would have had a different experience, but we weren't.  Oh well.  You can't win them all.
